What to Know about Aging in Place: Home Health Care vs. Home Care

September 9, 2019 by Debra Hallisey

What to Know about Aging in Place: Home Health Care vs. Home Care

Let me introduce you to the work of Dr. Leslie Kernisan, MD MPH

Dr. Kernisan is the founder of “Better Health While Aging“, where you will find practical information for family caregivers. She writes in-depth medical articles like 8 Things to Have the Doctor Check After an Aging Person Falls and Hospital Delirium: What to Know & Do.

In addition, Dr. Kernisan’s podcast is available to listen to on her site. Dr. Kernisan’s “Helping Older Parents Membership Program” is a place where you can get guidance and support from geriatric experts. The program reopens to new membership in October. You can join a waitlist for membership.

In this blog article Hiring Home Care for Aging in Place Michelle Allen, LCSW does a terrific job of explaining the difference between Home Care vs. Home Health. A topic that many family caregivers find confusing when trying to decide who can help their loved one with medication management, dressing, transportation or light housekeeping.

Ms. Allen takes you through who pays for what and the pros and cons of hiring through a home care agency vs. hiring your own caregiver privately. Please take note that she is not recommending paying someone “under the table”, in what the industry calls the “grey market.” If you are going to hire an individual privately, you are responsible for setting up an Employee Identification Number (EIN) in order to pay employment taxes. There are many risks to hiring in the grey market, not the least of which is putting your ability to get Medicaid in jeopardy should you ever need to apply.

A well written and easily understood article. Hiring Home Care for Aging in Place
