Pre-Planning is the Key to Family Vacations With Your Senior.

August 19, 2019 by Debra Hallisey

Pre-Planning is the Key to Family Vacations With Your Senior.

How one family made it happen successfully.

Elizabeth Miller of the Happy Healthy Caregiver is a colleague. On her website, you will find her podcasts and blog. Her work like mine, came about because we are caregivers. Elizabeth is part of her mother’s caregiving team.

Growing up, Elizabeth and her family vacationed at Hubbard Lake in Michigan. The tradition has continued through the years as extended family’s vacationed together at their lake home.  It is now the permanent residence of her 81-year old mom who is bedridden and needs 24-hour care. Mom’s primary caregiver is Suzie, Elisabeth’s sister.

For years the family has tried to overlap vacations so they could be together. But this year is different. Mom is declining and having everyone descend on the family home at the same time would be too much for her and Suzie.

Take a moment to read how this family lovingly planned in advance the best way to let mom have visitors with out exhausting her and allowed Susie some mental sanity and self-care. How they took into consideration topics that needed face-to-face conversations, who needed to be involved in them, and ways to keep true family vacation type moments a part of their plan.

What I love about this article is seeing how this family works as a caregiving team. I learned a lot from the planning and structure they put around this time together. It gave their mom back pieces of her life that she loved before becoming bed ridden. Did they have to modify them yes. Did they miss seeing everyone at in the same place at the same time? I’m sure they did. But the gift they gave mom and themselves, was carrying on the legacy of family vacations at a place they all love. And doing it in a way that honored her mom and memories of previous vacations taken through the years.
